ABOUT
WHAT IS ORBITUS?
Orbitus is a real-time Newtonian gravity sandbox. Click and drag to spawn celestial bodies with velocity, then watch as gravity does the rest — stable orbits, chaotic scattering, collisions and mergers all emerge from the same simple force law. Choose from five curated presets or create your own cosmic systems from scratch. Zero dependencies. Pure physics. Infinite possibilities.
PRESETS
FIVE CURATED SYSTEMS TO EXPLORE
Solar System
A pinned star with six orbiting planets of varying mass and distance. The classic setup.
Binary Stars
Two massive stars locked in mutual orbit with circumbinary planets threading between them.
Figure-8
The famous Chenciner–Montgomery solution: three equal bodies tracing a figure-eight path.
Chaos
25 random bodies in a cosmic arena. Collisions, mergers, and ejections guaranteed.
Lagrange
A star with planet and Trojan asteroids at the stable L4/L5 Lagrange points.
MASS TIERS
FIVE CLASSES OF CELESTIAL BODY
PHYSICS
REAL NEWTONIAN MECHANICS
Velocity Verlet Integration
Symplectic integrator preserving energy over long timescales. 6 substeps per frame for smooth, stable orbits.
N-Body Simulation
Every body attracts every other body — no shortcuts, no approximations. Pure gravitational complexity.
Inelastic Collisions
Bodies that approach within merging distance combine mass and momentum, spawning particle explosions.
Orbit Prediction
While spawning, see a dotted trajectory showing where your body will go based on current gravitational field.
Dynamic Trails
Up to 400-point orbital trails with fade-out. Bright recent segments and dimmed history reveal orbital evolution.
Body Pinning
Double-click any body to pin it in place as a fixed gravitational anchor. Perfect for building solar systems.
